High Value, Low Volume
Since opening to tourism in 1974, the Royal Government of Bhutan has followed a policy known as “High Value, Low Volume.” Rather than maximising visitor numbers, Bhutan aims to attract travellers who value a mindful, low-impact style of travel that respects the country’s environment, culture, and way of life. Tourism in Bhutan is regulated by the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) and its Department of Tourism (DoT), and Tashi Tagye Hotel operates as a registered accommodation provider under these regulations.
Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
All international tourists visiting Bhutan are required to pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) for each night of their stay. As of 2026, the SDF is USD 100 per adult, per night — a reduced rate in effect through 31 August 2027 — and USD 50 per night for children aged 6–12; children under 6 are exempt. Regional visitors (from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives) pay a separate, lower fee under their own simplified entry arrangements. The SDF is collected by the Government of Bhutan, not by this hotel, and funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, cultural preservation, and environmental conservation projects across the country.
Visa & Entry Requirements
International tourists must arrange a Bhutan visa in advance, together with SDF payment, through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or their hotel before arrival. Regional visitors travel on a permit issued on arrival or in advance, using a valid passport or voter ID card, per current Department of Tourism rules.
